8 people perish in Makueni accident

Eight people died on Thursday night in Makueni county, after a matatu they had boarded collided with a truck.

The accident happened at Mlima Kiu area, along the busy Makueni-Nairobi highway about 11pm.

Several others were injured.

Makueni county police commander Barnabas Ng'eno who confirmed the accident said the eight people died on the spot.

He said the matatu was heading towards Nairobi, while the truck was on the way towards Mombasa.

Meanwhile, death toll from an accident that occurred in Voi, Taita Taveta county on Thursday evenning has hit 13 after one more person died hours later.

Twelve people died on the spot.

The accident involved a lorry and a Nissan matatu.

The two vehicles collided head-on at Ndii area, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

That means 21 people have died in road accidents in less than 24 hours.
