Abduction is not part of Kenyan Constitution,it must stop
By Robert Mutasi
The increase lately in the abduction of government critics in Kenya is very worrying and needs immediate attention and action by the President William Ruto-led administration.
These incidents are not only a violation of basic human rights but also threaten the democratic fabric of our nation.
The government's response to the public outcry has been wanting. Indeed, President Ruto has promised to stop the abductions, but the fact that they continue means there's a connection between rhetoric and reality.
Kidnapping has continued to cause fear among citizens, the opposition is suppressed and makes the public lose faith in the security agencies in general.
In other words, kidnapping is full of negative effects that are painful. Kenya's international reputation is being destroyed.
Western countries have been strongly condemning these cases of kidnapping and calling on the government to take responsibility.
The right time has come for the Kenyan government to take important steps to end this conflict.
Every time an activist or a citizen stands and criticizes the government over the pressing issues and poor governance, his or her life is in danger.
The government should strive to immediately stop cases of kidnapping by conducting a thorough investigation.
The investigation should be independent and transparent. The parties should be released without considering or caring about their positions.
In addition, the government should introduce new reforms in the security agencies to be more responsible for renewing its mission of human rights monitoring
The security of civil liberties is one of the most important aspects of nation building and democracy. But ongoing kidnappings are being used to undermine that security.
President Ruto's administration should restore confidence by taking important steps.
The Government of Kenya Kwanza has a moral and constitutional responsibility to protect the rights and freedoms of all its citizens without threatening them.
