Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili Owino, popularly known as Babu Owino, has made a strong and emotive speech declaring his intention to vie for the Orange Democratic Movement-ODM Party Leader position.

This will see him take on the long-serving party leader Raila Amolo Odinga.

Owino took to his official social media account on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, to share a statement. He celebrated Odinga's instrumental role in transforming Kenya's politics over the past five decades and termed him an ardent ally of the voice of the common Kenyan.

Owino emphasized the significance of Odinga in the struggle for multi-party democracy in Kenya, working together with political leaders such as Paul Muite, James Orengo, Anyang' Nyong'o, and Martha Karua, who brought vital changes to the constitution.

Owino also expressed how crucial Odinga was in securing the 2010 Constitution, one which has transformed the way in which the country is governed.

"The fight by Raila Odinga for political participation and governance reform brought Kenya to where it is now," Owino said.

He also focused on the significant years of the Kibaki-Odinga government, between 2008 and 2013, referring to that period as one of Kenya's best years of development and service delivery.

Owino expressed his support for Odinga probably bringing influence to the African Union Commission chairpersonship, considering what lies beyond Kenya.

He said that was why Odinga's Pan-Africanism makes him the best candidate to help the continent work together more, have peace, trade, and grow.

Owino said this would involve relieving Odinga of his local political responsibilities, including his current position as ODM Party Leader.

As the ODM Party prepares to select an interim leader, Owino expressed interest in assuming this position.

He felt the party needs a strong leadership that will see it move forward. This leader should ensure people's support remains steadfast, with the party being viewed as a force to reckon with for the 2027 general election.

He promised to change the party, increase its local involvement, and win big in Parliament and County Assemblies to ensure that the party delivers its promises.

Owino also emphasized that the inclusion of Kenya's youth was important. He said that young people now comprised over half of the population, hence guidance and inclusion in nation building was needed.

He showed he is committed to leading ODM in this effort.

In fact, Owino concluded with the assurance that "The person who should replace Baba is one who will beat Ruto in 2027, and that's me."

He called on the ODM Central Management Committee to consider his candidature.

He said he really was looking forward to leading the party into a new era of political engagement, election winning, and service to the country.
