Ex-GSU officer arrested

Police in Busia in collaboration with DCI and General Service Unit (GSU) officers from Nairobi have arrested a former GSU officer in connection with stealing guns from a GSU camp.
Speaking to the press and Nambale police station on Sunday, the Sub County Police Commander George Opere said that Isaac Onyango Wanjala was arrested at his Mabunge home on Sunday.
“Today police officers from Nambale police station, DCIO Busia/ Nambale, DCIO from Nairobi, GSU compact from Nairobi mounted an operation within Mabunge in Nambale Sub County to arrest one of the suspects, Isaac Onyango Weanjala, an Ex GSU officer at his home in Mabunge village,” he said.
Opere added that when the officers arrived at Wanjala’s home, the latter sensed the presence of the officers and tried to escape into a nearby cane plantation.
“Our officers were swift enough and managed to arrest him at around”, he said, adding that upon interrogation, the suspect led the team to the place where he had hidden the stolen weapons near the bank of River Suo.
He further said that the team recovered two rifles hidden in a sack labeled Olepito brown sugar and buried along the river.
“The officers combed the area and recovered two rifles and one magazine with 20 rounds of ammunition,” he said.
The official at the same time said that a police rain coat and 58 GSU bags were also found in the suspect’s home.
Opere stated that the two rifles were stolen from Mt. Elgon GSU camp in Bungoma County.
“The suspect also stole a mobile phone from one of the officers at the GSU camp,” he said, adding that it has been confirmed that the suspect was a GSU officer who has another case pending in court.
