By Joshua Cheloti The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has finally issued a direct nomination to Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga to contest the county's gubernatorial seat in the August 9, 2022, General Elections. Wanga was handed a direct nomination during a meeting presided over by ODM party leader Raila Odinga. Under the new arrangement, Wanga will be vying for the gubernatorial seat with former Member of Parliament Oyugi Magwanga as her running mate. Magwanga was also in the race to be the next Homa Bay Governor. The race had attracted 7 aspirants who were eyeing the ODM ticket, among them former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero. Earlier, there were reports that the party was considering using consensus to pick its candidate in Homa Bay, in a bid to avert fall out that might arise from party primaries. The decision to hand the party ticket to the vocal Woman Rep comes just a day after reports that she had been settled on, although some aspirants said they had not been consulted. Later, ODM National Elections Board (NEB) said it would only issue direct tickets to candidates in areas where there is only a single candidate or when candidates agree to pick the flagbearer through consensus. “We shall only issue direct nomination certificates to single candidates in every electoral area, those who appear popular as per the opinion polls conducted by the party and those who will have been agreed on after the process of consensus,” said ODM NEB chairperson Catherine Mumma.
