Deputy President William Ruto has alleged that the state is using public finances to lure and ‘buy’ politicians into the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by ODM leader Raila Odinga. Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday March 26, 2022, Ruto claimed that billions of shillings that was set aside for purchase of fertilizer, is now being used to alleged pay politicians for them to join Azimio. The DP claimed that the state has abandoned thousands of Kenyans who are suffering from hunger and starvation, adding that the money allegedly being used in campaigns would have helped solve the hunger crisis. “Today, the billions of money in the budget that had been set aside to buy fertilizer that would be sold to farmers at subsidized prices is being spent on other things. Some Sh5.7 billion is being used to buy politicians. “Today, so many Kenyans are dying of hunger because of poor farm yields. Are these people humane to spend such amount on politicians? Someone who has never slept hungry, does not understand the problems of the people at the grassroots,” Ruto was quoted by The Star. According to him, the bottom up philosophy  is the cure to these issues facing the country. During the coastal tour, the DP affirmed to his supporters that he is investing in mechanisms to guard his votes, adding that he and the Kenya Kwanza team are eoptimistic of carrying the day when Kenyans take to the polls in August. “These individuals now claim that they will still votes. Do I look like someone who you can easily steal from? We competed with them in Kiambaa, Juja and Msambweni and we beat them hands down. We will beat them on August 9 and there is nothing they will do,” the DP added.
