Lesedi MD in court for swindling his clients over Sh 5.4 Million

Troubled Lesedi Developers Ltd Managing Director Geoffrey Kahugi Kiragu was today presented before a Thika court and charged with 12 counts of obtaining money by false pretense by pretending that he was in a position to sell plots, a fact he knew was false.

Kiragu denied the charges before Thika Senior Resident magistrate Oscar Wanyaga of defrauding 12 people Sh5.4 million pretending to sell them plots of land in Thika. 

His lawyers Daniel Gachau Mwangi and a veteran lawyer John Khaminwa told the court to consider releasing him on a cash bail of Sh50,000 saying the case shouldn't be treated as criminal but a civil case.

Lawyer Gachau argued that some of the complainants had filed a similar case in small claims court and that the matter before the court should be domiciled in the same court that deals with civil matters.

Khaminwa on his part said he had instructions from the accused that he would prefer settling the matter outside the court arguing that the victims knew very well the risks they were undertaking while entering into such a business.

The magistrate however, ordered the accused to continue staying in police custody until Thursday September 21, 2023 when the court will give directions.

At the court, over 100 shareholders of the troubled Lesedi Developers Ltd flocked to have a glimpse of the man who has been on the run after defrauding them of millions of shillings in a fake land sale.
