Malala ahead of Fernandes Barasa in Kakamega gubernatorial race – poll

By Joshua Cheloti The latest opinion poll has rated Cleophas Malala as the most preferred Kakamega gubernatorial aspirant in the upcoming general election. The opinion poll conducted by Mizani Africa puts Malala, the Kenya Kwanza gubernatorial aspirant in the county with a preference of 47.6 per cent among the locals that took part in the poll. According to Mizani Africa, the survey involved 1,063 respondents who were contacted through phone interviews. Barasa was recently handed a direct ODM ticket by party leader Raila Odinga. Malala’s bid to be the second governor of Kakamega received a major boost a few weeks ago after his competitor Bonny Khalwale opted out. The deal brokered by Deputy President William Ruto, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wentangula of Ford Kenya saw Khalwale join the Senatorial race. Laban Atemba comes a distant third in the race with an 8.7 per cent preference among the Kakamega locals. In the Kakamega Senate seat race, Khalwale is in a commanding lead with 66.3 per cent of the respondents saying they prefer him to succeed outgoing Malala. Douglas Shamala has a 16.9 per cent preference while Dr. Brian Lishenga polled 6.0 per cent. In the survey released on Friday, April 8, 2022, 41.3 per cent of the locals interviewed said they prefer her to continue holding the position. Muhanda is seeking re-election under the ODM party. Peninah Mukabana a former civil servant had 26.9 per cent preference in the Kakamega Woman Rep race while Naomi Shiyonga had 17.9 per cent. Kakamega is a key battleground between Azimio la Umoja and Kenya Kwanza ahead of the August 9 general election. Each of the two teams is hoping to win key seats in the populous county that has for the past two elections been an ODM stronghold.
