Missed chances and lapses in defense in Anfield showdown
By Robert Mutasi
Liverpool helding a draw of 2-2 against Manchester United at Anfield during an English Premier League campaign masked a history of missed opportunities and defensive errors that could no doubt haunt them later in the season as the Premier League campaign progresses.
Liverpool's performance in the first half was solid at the back, but without the ferocity in attack that has typified them this campaign.
The Reds really struggled to break down United's full-backs-a worrying sign regarding how Liverpool have turned their strong points into an advantage, most importantly in the crucial matches.
Manchester United had earlier shown great promise, with the opening goal from Lisandro Martínez being a well-worked header from Bruno Fernandes' cross, but that joy was short-lived as their defence crumbled under Liverpool's pressure.
The equaliser-from Cody Gakpo-engineered by Alexis Mac Allister-was to expose United's weaknesses in handling quick turnovers.
A penalty by Mohamed Salah showed intent by Liverpool-the capability to punish their opponents for mistakes-but how they lacked confidence to wrap up the easy advantage presented by Amad Diallo at the end, speaks volumes about the defensive focus at such a critical stage of the match, a situation that should concern Jurgen Klopp if the Reds are to have any sense of direction this season.
For Manchester United, though, this draw might also be regarded as a victory in the context of the match.
However, it was defensive mistakes with the resultant penalties and failure to maintain control that highlighted a lack of consistency which could have ruined their hopes.
A touchstone, yes, but a reminder of how small the differences are in football: both teams had flashes of brilliance but were ultimately nullified by their own flaws.
Liverpool and Manchester United will have to learn from this meeting to avoid falling into similar pitfalls.
The reverse fixture promises to be another eye-catching clash, but only time will tell whether these giants have learned their lesson.
