By Joshua Cheloti The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has finally issued a statement concerning the criteria it will be using to issue direct nominations to aspirants. Party’s National Election Board (NEB) issued the statement on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, following reports that it had issued a direct ticket to Homa Bay gubernatorial aspirant Gladys Wanga. The report has since been dismissed as untrue, with some of the aspirants saying they were not aware of any decision to issue a direct nomination to the vocal Woman Representative. The party also said they will issue direct tickets to candidates that will appear popular based on the opinion polls as well as through consensus. “We shall only issue direct nomination certificates to single candidates in every electoral area, those who appear popular as per the opinion polls conducted by the party and those who will have been agreed on after the process of consensus” Catherine Mumma-NEB Chairperson,” ODM tweeted. Reports of direct nomination issuance had sparked panic among aspirants seeking the Orange Party ticket. It came just days after ODM leader Raila Odinga, while on a tour to Western Kenya endorsed several candidates among them Kakamega gubernatorial aspirant Fernandez Barasa and MP aspirants Tindi Mwale (Butere), Titus Khamala (Lurambi), Peter Nabulindo (Matungu), Christopher Aseka (Khwisero) and Majority Whip Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo). The party has also issued a direct ticket to former Agriculture Principal Secretary Hamadi Boga who is eyeing the Kwale gubernatorial seat and Nathif Jamah (Garissa). Multiple media have also reported that ODM had started refunding nomination fee to candidates that had been in areas where they have issued direct nominations. One such case is Garissa Governor Ali Korane who ODM is said to be preparing to repay his half a million shillings after they opted to give former governor Nathif Jamah a direct ticket.
