At least 350,000 people have been registered for the Inua Jamii programme countrywide since the registration exercise began eight days ago as more people turn up in large numbers for the social protection exercise.

The registration which is ongoing until the end of this month targets to enlist 500,000 vulnerable people including orphans, people with severe disabilities, and elderly people of 70 years and above.

Principal Secretary for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs Joseph Motari announced the update during his visit to Ngerenya registration center in Kilifi revealing that they have been working hard to handle the huge number of citizens and assured the public that every qualified person for the programme will be listed.

“We are doing well as of today, the number we have captured as of this morning is 356,500 people in the Republic of Kenya. You see our target is 500,000 so we are not far from the level we need to reach”, he said.

Accompanied by Kilifi North MP Owen Baya and other leaders, the PS said that the administration and local leaders have given tremendous support towards the exercise to make the registration run smoothly and fast.

He further said that the government has given full support to the vulnerable people in the society adding that the registration will go a long way to ensure they get the needed financial support every month as directed by President William Ruto.

“Let us intake these citizens and strive to support them even if it is to pay them in phases. We will make sure that they are registered and send the data to the office for review and validation, then I will submit the report to the president. He will guide me on the next course of action”, he said.

During his address to the media, Kilifi North MP Owen Baya said most of the elderly persons are suffering from many health conditions, therefore, expressed his hope that the Inua Jamii programme will save thousands of the newly registered citizens from possible early death due to extreme poverty in their families.

“There is a relationship between disability, old age and poverty. If we give money to these old people even that poverty will decrease so that they can live many years because they will be able to buy food and medicine for themselves so that they can live with dignity in their old age”, he said.

Rabai MP Kenga Mupe applauded the government’s efforts to support more people in the Inua Jamii programme and promised to use his machinery to support the registration exercise to take place from door to door to ensure no qualified person in Rabai constituency is left out.
