The Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) has been a thorny issue among Vihiga residents that needed collaborative efforts to be contained.

The violence is mainly meted on women and children, the situation that prompted the county government to initiate a process of coming up with SGBV and Children’s policies which are currently awaiting public participation before they are adopted.

The County Director for Social Services and Gender (CDSG) Arthur Lisimba said the two documents would be ready for launching in November 2023 to pave the way for their implementation.

Mr. Lisimba, who was speaking during the County Gender Sector Working Group (CGSWG) forum, commended the multi-sectorial partners for organizing meetings to champion for women and children’s rights.

Betty Okero, from the Civil Society Organizations’ (CSO) network, said they have established women, peace and security committees at the grassroots level to enhance the impact of women rights advocacy activities.

She noted that through their efforts the masses have been enlightened about gender equality and justice for all.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) western regional manager Mercy Ogwel, said they have been championing women participation in politics and the peace process that has resulted in more women vying and winning electoral positions.

Hellen Muchunu, from UN Women, observed that the campaign for empowering women is geared towards the realization of gender equality and balanced socio-economic development.
