'Yesu wa Tongaren' locked up for four more days

By Peter Ochieng

Eliud Wekesa alias 'Yesu wa Tongaren (Jesus of Tongaren) will spent four more days in police custody, in Bungoma.

Bungoma Principal Magistrate Tom Olando on Friday allowed police to detain him for mental assessment.

During that time, police will also conduct a search at his home and his New Jerusalem Church.

Prosecution had applied to have him detained for 10 days to pave way for investigation over claims of indoctrination.

"The court has agreed and granted permission to the prosecution side to detain the suspect for four more days to allow them to complete the probe and carry out the mental assessment,” said the magistrate.

The self proclaimed Jesus will be back in court on Tuesday, 16th May, 2023.

His journey to court started on Wednesday, when he appeared before police in Bungoma for questioning over his religious activities.

He was probed again on Thursday, before before detained and arraigned in court.

Wekesa says he is ready for what may come.

"I cannot criticize God's work," he said on Thursday.

The preacher said he will cooperate with police and the court.
