The fight for the running mate position among political parties within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition has taken a new twist.
This is after former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi claimed that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka did not negotiate with ODM leader Raila Odinga over the position.
Kalonzo has lately been demanding that he be picked as the running mate in the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.
However, according to Elachi, who is eyeing the Dagoretti North MP seat, the former Vice President only had an agreement with President Uhuru Kenyatta and not Raila.
The president is a key figure for the coalition in which he has been listed as the chairman, according to documents deposited with the Registrar of Political parties.
“Kalonzo sat with the President and negotiated and not with the former Prime Minister,” Elachi said during an interview on K24 TV on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.“Kalonzo said he cannot negotiate with Raila and so he negotiated with the President. What was this agreement you had with the President? You are dragging Raila into something he was never part of,” she added.

Kalonzo has been blowing cold and hot since agreeing to shelve his presidential bid in support of Raila for a record third time.
In the last two general elections, the Wiper party leader has been Raila Odinga’s deputy – on both occasions, the combination failed to win the presidency – a seat won by President Uhuru Kenyatta, with William Ruto as his deputy.
But as the August 9 poll nears, there has been a doubt as to whether Kalonzo will yet again deputize the former Prime Minister, with the coalition facing a tough balancing act of getting a share of Mount Kenya votes and ensuring they don’t lose out on Ukambani votes.
“They are busy conspiring who will be running mate and who will not be running mate. Please help them to change and know that what God has determined no human being will stop it,” Kalonzo said during an event with church leaders on Monday.
Narc Kenya party leader has of late emerged as a possible candidate to jointly vie for the top seat with Raila. She has already been endorsed by the Azimio Women League.
“We don’t know why you cannot see the value of Martha. Her record speaks for itself. Karua is one of the formidable female politicians in the country who can sway crowds towards a particular direction,” said CAS Ministry of Public Service and Gender Programmes Rachael Wambui Shebesh.
