Youths advised to develop apps

The cabinet secretary ICT and digital economy Eliud Owalo has called on ICT graduates to take advantage of the free wifi being provided by the government to develop marketing applications which traders can use to sell their wares.

Noting that with the internet people no longer need to meet physically to conduct business, Owalo said the Apps will assist traders expand their businesses as many people will be able to access the App and therefore their products.

 “With the App, one will only need to post their products online where customers can order for the same wherever they are and all one needs to do is to arrange on how the orders will be delivered

Owalo made the remarks during the inauguration of the Jitume Youth Digital Empowerment Centre at Kapcherop Technical and Vocational College.,” the CS said.

The CS who was accompanied by the governor Wisley Rotich, TransNzoia senator Allan Chesang and ICT PS Eng. John Tanui called on youths to ensure they get technological skills in the various government sponsored vocational centres so that they can engage in online jobs.

The CS said the government was in the process of establishing digital hubs in all wards and vocational training centres and therefore the need for youths to get the skills to enable them earn a living online.

“The digital hubs being created have the capacity of creating one million jobs every year, so we are urging the youths to learn the required the skills so that they can seize the opportunities,” he said.

The CS further said that Kapcherop Town will experience a significant boost in its digital connectivity as the Ministry prepares to launch public Wi-Fi hotspots in the area.

CS Owalo highlighted the forthcoming implementation of public Wi-Fi in Kapcherop, emphasizing its potential to greatly benefit the local business community.

He noted that with access to Wi-Fi hotspots, entrepreneurs in Kapcherop will be able to promote their businesses not only within Kenya but also in the global market. This move is expected to enhance economic growth and facilitate increased opportunities for the region. 

The Iten boda boda chairperson Gilbert Kibet said the public wifi will go a long way in boosting their businesses saying most of their customers instruct them to get goods through whatsapp and therefore they are forced to buy bundles to access whatsapp.

“From now we will not have to spend to buy bundles and therefore we will save the monies we have been using daily for the same,” he said.

Saying that there are over 3,000 athletes operating in Iten, the governor said the wifi will assist them in applying for visas online adding that residents will also be able to access the various government services online.
