The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) has called on the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) to fully implement and enforce the minimum wage for guards as set by the government.
COTU Secretary General (SG) Francis Atwoli said the private security guards are suffering due to the low pay subjected to them by the employers.
“Those small unnecessary security insurance companies that underpay guards will be elbowed out of the security guard companies,” he warned.
Atwoli urged the security companies to respond to their calls positively and increase the salaries of the security guards.
The SG requested the government to offer training and arm the security guards for them to conveniently serve the people.
“The guards should be given two weeks’ crush programme training to let them know how to cock guns, defend themselves and protect the life and properties of other people,” requested Atwoli.
While briefing the media at Solidarity House in Nairobi on Tuesday, Atwoli hinted at their plan to reconstitute private security regulatory authority leaders who failed to deliver their mandate due to their selfish gains.
“The employer who runs security business will be circumstantially compelled to adhere to signed Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs),” revealed Atwoli, adding that they should be accountable to labour authorities so as to reduce workers’ exploitation.
