The government has scaled up the war on illicit brews in Uasin Gishu which pose a health hazard to the residents.

On Wednesday a crackdown carried out by all chiefs and security officers from Cheptiret Division in Kesses Sub County impounded 600 litres of kangara along with 40 litres of Chang’aa.

In an interview with the Kenya News Agency during the crack operation at Kapkoi location, Kesses Deputy County Commissioner Lilian Lagat said that they have intensified the fight against the illicit brew following complaints by members of the public who said the cases have increased.

She added that the authorities managed to arrest one person in connection during the incident.

Earlier on, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Dr. Eddyson Nyale who chairs the County Multi-Agency Team on the crackdown of illicit alcohol and drug substances, vowed that the National Police Service, and other national government officers have enhanced vigilance in the county as a key measure geared towards getting rid of illicit alcohol.

“We will continue with the crackdown in all sub-counties, those in this illegal business we warn you to stop before we get to you,” he warned.

He also advised investors in this kind of industry to consider investing in other legal and constructive businesses that could benefit the residents and community at large.

Nyale further decried the fact that alcohol-related deaths in Kenya were common although they could be prevented with the right enforcement.

He added that the brewers have different sections for distilling, bottling and sealing the brews. The problem he says is that the brews are normally mixed with a lethal concoction ethanol by dealers in a bid to make more profits and get more clients.
