Vihiga County residents have expressed support for the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) and are now urging the government to extend it to all the sub counties.

Tom Amudavi, a villager and manual labourer at the site, praised the project saying it had enabled him to provide the basic needs for his family.

Speaking during a public participation forum at the Vihiga Friends Church, Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo said they are collaborating with the national government to ensure the programme succeeds.

Mr. Kitiezo stated that the county administration is ready to chip in whenever and wherever possible for the actualization of the project.

Kaimosi Friends University acting Vice Chancellor Prof Jack Nandi plans to donate land to government agencies for the construction of houses for university employees.

He lamented that the varsity workers have been compelled to stay in the neighbouring Kakamega and Kisumu counties because of the shortage in Vihiga County.

The University Student Association’s Chairperson Collins Munialo also disclosed that only 800 of the over 4,000 students are housed in campus hostels while the rest have to look for accommodation services elsewhere.

Munialo stated that most students reside in substandard rooms at nearby market centres, where they frequently are victims of burglaries and insecurity issues.

The County Registration Officer (CRO) Mark Simiyu observed that availing housing units for civil servants would boost their convenience and enhance service delivery.
