In a joint operation, Kenyan police officers have seized a significant haul of contraband goods along the Modogashe-Garissa highway.

Three Toyota Probox vehicles were impounded, and three suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

The contraband items, believed to have originated from neighboring Somalia, included a variety of goods.

The contraband goods include 230 canes of powder, 150-2.5kg canes of powdered milk, at least 5000-50grams of sachets of powdered milk, 2 bags of sugars, 100 tins of honey, 450 pieces of kikoi less, 116 pairs of women shoes among other things.

The operation, conducted by the Garissa Township Police Commander, Samuel Boito, aimed to combat the illegal smuggling of goods across the border.

The three vehicles were intercepted near the Modogashe area, a known transit point for contraband.

Upon inspection, the police discovered the concealed goods within the vehicles. The suspects were apprehended and are currently in police custody.

According to Garissa Township Police Commander, police got wind of the suspects from members of the public before mounting around block along the road and later arrested the suspects.

"We received intelligent information that there was movement of contraband goods along Modogashe-Garissa road, we mounted a team with an intention of intercepting them, we managed to intercept and caught the vehicles upon checking on it, was found to be carrying the contraband, " he stated.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the contraband and the individuals involved in the smuggling operation.

The suspects are held at the Garissa Police Station as investigation is underway to determine the matter and approximate the value of the goods before charging them.

The seizure of the contraband goods is a significant blow to the illegal trade network operating along the Kenya-Somalia border.

It highlights the ongoing efforts of Kenyan law enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities and protect the country's economy.
