The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has been proactive in guiding journalists on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their practices. Recognizing AI's transformative potential, the MCK emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations, adherence to established codes of conduct, and awareness of both the benefits and challenges associated with AI in media.

In October 2023, the MCK inaugurated a technical committee tasked with developing guidelines on AI application, data, and social media usage to ensure ethical integration into professional journalism in Kenya.

This initiative pointed out the Council's commitment to equipping journalists with the necessary skills to navigate the digital era responsibly. MCK Nakuru Regional Coordinator, Joseph Mecha, highlighted the Council's dedication, stating that training programs are designed to help journalists stay current with evolving technologies and create monetizable content.

The "Media Guide on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Kenya," published by the MCK, serves as a comprehensive resource for journalists. It addresses ethical considerations such as transparency, data protection, and bias mitigation, providing a framework for the responsible adoption of AI in media practices.

The guide emphasizes the need for journalists to balance innovation with ethical standards, ensuring that AI enhances rather than compromises journalistic integrity.

AI offers numerous advantages to the media industry, including streamlined content creation, personalized audience engagement, and efficient data analysis.

However, the MCK cautions against potential pitfalls such as the spread of misinformation, erosion of journalistic accountability, and biases in AI algorithms. The Council advocates for a balanced approach, leveraging AI's benefits while remaining vigilant about its challenges.

MCK CEO, David Omwoyo, has been vocal about the imperative for journalists to embrace technological advancements. He urged women journalists to leverage technology to maintain relevance in the fast-paced newsroom environment.

The emphasis is on continuous learning, ethical adherence, and proactive engagement with emerging technologies to enhance the quality and integrity of journalism in Kenya.
