The Torobeek-speaking community of Kalenjin descent is still to be recognized as Kenyans thanks to a petition handled by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the Senate.

The Dorobo, as known in records, resided in Mau Forest as hunters and gatherers and hence had no contact with the civilized Kenya they are now seeking to be part of after the Government's directive that all those residing in the forest land must vacate.

Led by Paul Mosbei, the Torobeek elders during a courtesy call to Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei Saturday, Chair Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, sought to have the community be compensated for the land they lost.

Mosbei said the community was displaced and lost their places of residence exposing them and their families to untold anguish and suffering.

He said the lack of essential documents such as a National Identity card has hindered them from accessing crucial Government services such as medical covers as well as essential financial services.

He added that their children have missed out on education and employment opportunities since they are considered refugees.

Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei said he had presented the petition, to the Senate, seeking to address the longstanding grievances of marginalization and neglect by the Government as well as recommendations for a comprehensive framework with clear timelines for compensation.
