Reprieve for needy students set to join secondary schools

The county has set aside Sh21 million to be issued as bursaries for learners from Turkana joining Form 1 in the year 2024 in various secondary schools across the nation.

This comes less than two weeks after Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan officially launched the Turkana County Education Fund and announced the allocation of Sh534 million for bursaries, scholarships, and the higher education loan scheme.

This is expected to be a big relief to the parents of bright and needy learners whose fate depended on the bursary to jumpstart their secondary school education.

At a meeting with the principals of secondary schools in Turkana, Chief Officer for Administration, Education, and Social Protection Moses Korea revealed the allocation in the presence of Joseph Elibach Longole, the chair of the County Education Fund.

“Out of the Sh534 million allocated for the 2023-2024 financial year, Sh427 million has been earmarked for bursaries, Sh64 million for scholarships, and Sh26 million for the Turkana County Higher Education Loan Scheme,” Chief Officer Korea explained.

He asked the principals not to send away learners from school as the county was working towards the release of the funds to the respective schools.

“Governor Lomorukai has proven his commitment to education through this scheme; he has also facilitated the establishment of a board to oversee the process. It is our collective duty to ensure that the children stay in school,” Chief Korea said.
