The Speaker of the County Assembly of Turkana, Christopher Nakuleu, together with elected and nominated MCAs from Turkana North have declared their support for Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.
The declaration was made on Sunday during a consultative meeting with residents of Lokitaung and professionals at the Lokitaung Baraza Park.
Led by Speaker Nakuleu, the leaders defended their decision to work with the governor stating that he was validly elected by the majority and that he had already called for unity of purpose from all leaders regardless of their political affiliation.
"It is my prayer that Turkana people from Kibish to Kapedo will unite behind President Ruto and Governor Lomorukai if we are to get any meaningful development in our region," said Speaker Nakuleu.
"My interest in working with Governor Lomorukai is for the benefit of all Turkana people and not Turkana North as a region," he added.
In his remarks, Governor Lomorukai said he would not relent on his mission to work and unite all leaders because a few individuals did not want to see it happen.
He said, "I will not apologize to anyone for working with President Ruto and Speaker Nakuleu or uniting with our MCAs. I want to inform you that I am a Governor with a Christian background, and I believe the most important thing is uniting our people and their leaders."
Governor Lomorukai assured the people that he would appoint individuals based on merit and outlined his administration plan on water, food security, peace building, and conflict resolution.
The leaders had earlier attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations and a fundraiser to aid development activities at St. Mark's Catholic Parish.
The County speaker announced that he and the governor had agreed to work with the National Government.
He urged Governor Lomorukai to work freely and not accept being held hostage by a section of egocentric political leaders who had put their interests first but used political parties as a shield.
County Woman Representative Cecilia Ngitit echoed Speaker Nakuleu's calls for focused leadership and assured that all leaders had abandoned party politics and agreed to join Governor Lomorukai's development agenda.
Members of the County Assembly thanked the governor for considering professionals from the region in his appointment and castigated unnamed leaders who they said were in a spirited smear campaign aimed at dividing people into political lines.
Others who spoke included Lokichar MCA and leader of Minority Samuel Lomodo and former Chief of Staff Bonface Korobe who spoke on behalf of Turkana North professionals.
Senior County Government officials accompanying the Governor included the County Executive for Health and Sanitation Dr Antony Apalia, Chief Officer at the Office of the Governor Simon Etom, as well as Chief Officer nominee and Director for Medical Services Dr Gilchrist Lokoel.
