Lamu-Witu-Garsen road remains closed due to heavy flooding, after Tana River burst its banks.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that the Garsen-Witu-Lamu Road is closed due to heavy rainfall, disrupting the main road connecting Lamu's mainland to the Malindi Mombasa Highway, affecting commuters and goods transport.
The affected section of the road is still completely submerged, making it impassable for all vehicles.
Speaking to the media over ongoing mitigating effort, Lamu County Commissioner Louis Ronoh stated that boat operators have been dispatching boats from Lamu Island to aid in ferrying goods and commuters to and from the affected areas, so as to mitigate the impact on pedestrians stranded between Gamba and Lango la Simba.
He highlighted that this temporary solution aims to ensure safe passage for individuals on flooded roads and urged motorists to exercise caution and halt travel plans until further notice.
Motorists plying the Lamu-Witu Garsen road, most of whom were coming from the 21st edition of the Lamu Cultural Festival, have been stranded since Saturday following heavy floods that cut off the Garsen-Witu road.
