Three hundred and fifty-eight Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers who were on contract, have been confirmed as permanent and pensionable by the County Government of Makueni.

The revelation was made, Monday, by Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, who disclosed that the second cohort of 453 teachers, will also be confirmed during the 2024/2025 Financial Year.

"The first cohort of ECDE teachers that have been confirmed to permanent and pensionable position, were employed between 2014 and 2017, while the second batch of 453 who were recruited between 2017 and 2023, will be confirmed as from July, 2024," said Mutula, while issuing letters of confirmation to the 358 teachers, outside his office in Wote town.

However, he urged 139 teachers who had not provided their documents to the Makueni Public Service Board, to do so immediately in order to be considered for permanent and pensionable terms in their job description.

The Governor pledged unwavering commitment of his government in fostering a thriving education environment, where teachers are valued as partners in the transformative journey of learners.

During the function, the Governor flagged off ECDE learning and instructional materials worth Sh 9.8 million, to be distributed to 1,197 learning centres in the County.

Among the distributed items included text books, writing materials and desks.

"The flagging-off of the learning materials, symbolizes our commitment in making educational resources accessible to every child, a step towards ensuring no learner is left behind because of inadequate learning materials," he noted.

"The distribution of learning materials is geared towards promoting inclusivity by catering for the diverse needs of the learners by ensuring each child receives the tools they require to succeed," he added.

The Chairperson for Makueni Public Service Board, Mr. Nicodemus Muteti, said they have set aside Sh 65 million, to pay ECD teachers their salaries this Financial Year.

"Certificate holders will get a gross salary of Sh 30,000 while diploma holders will get Sh 41,000," said Muteti.

The Department of Education County Executive Committee Member (CECM), Elizabeth Muli challenged teachers to be committed in executing their duties and also urged them to be disciplined.
