The National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday pitched tent in Embu to gather views from officers and members of the public across eight counties in the Eastern Region on the proposed general duty uniform for police officers.
The meeting was one among a series of public participation gatherings being conducted across the country by NPS with a view of collecting public views on their preferences from several design samples proposed by NPS.
The participants were given an opportunity to have a feel of the different designs being showcased and also cast their vote on their preferred choices through division voting.
NPS Head of Logistics Peter Ndung’u said the forums had received encouraging reception in the regions the team had visited as it was the first time for the public to be involved in such an exercise.
Speaking at Eastern Regional Police Headquarters in Mugoya area, Ndung’u said all the views would be collated and thereafter presented to the appointing authority, Inspector General of Police, once the exercise is over.
He noted that the current deep blue uniform unveiled four years ago had proven difficult to adopt by officers for lack of public participation.
“Besides not being subjected to public participation, the current uniform was not gazetted and still does not have adequate security features,” he said.
He said the new designs were of high quality that meets international standards and intended to standardize appearance of officers with distinction in ranks communicated through badges.
Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich hailed the move as a way of enhancing the capacity of the public to effectively participate in issues of governance.
“It is one of a kind exercise and we hope that the final product will be a reflection of the wishes of Kenyans,” he said.
The team is expected to head to Nyanza before winding up the public participation forums in Western Region.
