Former presidential candidate Dr. Ekuru Aukot has stirred the political pot, with calls for the impeachment of President William Ruto over failed promises from the 2022 election campaign and current national issues.

During an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, October 3, 2024, Aukot said Ruto had failed in his promises to the country on solving its problems and thus needed to face the axe.

"If there is anybody to be impeached in this country, it is President William Ruto, because Kenyans have forgotten; nobody wants to talk about the promises of 2022 that were supposed to fix their problems," Aukot stated emphatically.

He added that his experience in government had given him insight into where the core issues lie, and he believes that current discussions around the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua missed the point.

"Gachagua's impeachment is inconsequential to the problems this country is facing," he continued.

His remarks also targeted recently reported plans to sell JKIA to Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, who has been embroiled in international controversies.

"Talking of the attempted sale of our airport to a crook called Adani, who has been banned in many countries and is under investigation, further highlights mismanagement of key sectors, " Aukot charged.

The former presidential candidate went on the attack, criticising the collapsed healthcare system, besides pointing at the unemployment crisis that was getting out of hand, with many Kenyans lacking stable livelihoods.

He painted a gloomy picture of the government's handling of public service delivery, which he said was in decline, attributing this to mismanagement and lack of accountability at the highest levels of government.

Since taking office, President Ruto has faced criticism for the slow pace in implementing some of the key promises of his 2022 campaign, like cost-of-living reductions and corruption.

The opposition politicians have taken the health system as a particular focal point and argue that the entire sector stands at almost a complete collapse, while shortages of essential supplies and medical staff further stretch it out.
