Traders and business men have been blamed in Tana River County for selling to customers’ underweight commodities such as sugar, grains and meat.
Tana River County Director for Trade and Investments Mr.Elisha Buya said, his department is undertaking inspection of weighing machines and scales in order to stop the problem of some traders selling underweight goods to people.
Mr.Buya urged the traders to present their weighing machines and scales for inspection at Hola Town near Chamber of Commerce Offices as from 29-31st,May 2023 for inspection whereby they will be stamped as valid machines for use.
Speaking to the press in Hola Town today, Mr.Buya said, after the inspection, traders who will be found using weighing machines that are not recommended by his office will be arrested and charged.
However, Coast Region Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr. Hassan Waro cautioned the trade officers against harassing traders, saying traders should be allowed enough time to present their weighing machines but not forcing them.
Mr.Wario said, trade officers sometimes use police officers to harass the traders during inspection of weighing machines.
He also said during the exercise, trade officers should work hand in hand with officials of Tana River County Chamber of Commerce and Industry so that no threats will be issued to traders whose weighing machines will not be in order but be allowed to pay the required fine.
