Kilifi Deputy Governor Flora Chibule has disabused the notion that vocational training is for failures and encouraged the youth to enrol in Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) to obtain technical skills.
She said while it is important for one to have a university degree, it is necessary to obtain technical skills from vocational training institutions because the world has become competitive and needs more technical expertise.
“It is very important for one to have technical skills because today’s world is very competitive,’ Ms Chibule said in Rabai Constituency during a public rally Thursday.
The deputy governor said that both youth and women should change their mentality that VTCs are meant for people who failed in national examinations and instead register for the courses, which are more marketable than degree courses.
She said the county executive committee had prepared a bill on VTCs which if passed by the local County Assembly would revolutionise vocational training in the county and thus attract more learners.
At the same time Ms Chibule said that the county administration had introduced a feeding programme in which all learners in the 881 Early Childhood Development (ECDE) Centres in the county are provided with fortified porridge
“The seven-seed flour which we are giving out is highly nutritious and will improve the health of the children in every centre as well as retain the learners in the centres,” said Ms Chibule.
