Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu is counting his lucky stars after surviving a road accident in Kisumu county on Monday morning.
Oyuu who spoke to the press after undergoing a check up at the Agha Khan hospital in Kisumu, says he is out of danger, alongside his driver who also survived the accident.
"As you can see I am very much okay, alive and kicking. I want to announce here officially that my driver and I are totally out of danger," Oyuu said.
The KNU SG was involved in an accident around Kit Mikayi area, in Seme.
He was travelling from his home in Rarieda, Siaya County to the Kisumu International Airport (KIA).
His driver lost control and rolled three times before landing on the road facing upside down. He rolled after swerving to avoid hitting a motorcycle rider, who was ferrying about four pupils to school.
The SG said they remained in the vehicle for about15 minutes before they were rescued and rushed to hospital. The car was badly damaged.
"On-lookers were shocked to see us get out of the vehicle unhurt and alive. The vehicle is badly damaged and I thank God we are alive. We could be talking of five dead people if my driver did not swerve to save the four children and the rider," he added.
He thanked teachers from various parts of the country for sharing their messages of good will, after the news about the accident filtered through.
Some KNUT Kisumu branch officials and members went to check on him at the Agha Khan hospital.
Oyuu, former KNUT chairman was elected SG on 26th June, 2021, to replace Wilson Sossion who resigned.
He is the seventh KNUT Secretary General, and was elected for a five year term.
He was the only candidate vying for the influential position, during the polls.
