The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Kisumu Chapter, has called for a speedy investigation into the recent police shootings which led to the death of a high school student, while three other victims are still nursing gunshot injuries.

Dorcas Oluoch, Chairperson LSK Kisumu Branch strongly condemned the use of excessive force on innocent individuals by police, terming it as a blatant disregard of human rights.

“The Law prohibits the use of excessive force by law enforcement officials. As Advocates, our role is to uphold the rule of law, as such we are strongly against extrajudicial executions and abuse of force by state organs,” stated Oluoch, during a press briefing in Kisumu.

The body offered to support the Office of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and  the Director of Public Prosecution, to expedite investigations into the matter, to ensure the perpetrators are duly prosecuted.

“We are aware that investigations are currently ongoing and through our Public Interest Litigation Committee we are willing and ready to work with other stakeholders to ensure that the culprits face the law and justice is served to the victims and their families,” assured Oluoch.

She noted with concern that the police have historically been heavy-handed towards the interactions with citizens in the region.

The lawyers offered their heartfelt condolences to the family of Jacinter Achieng, who succumbed to her injuries and wished the other victims who sustained injuries quick recovery.

“We are committed to defending the rights of those who were affected and we  uphold the rule of law as it's our mandate,’’ Oluoch emphasizedas she reassured of their focus on monitoring the investigation and prosecution phases.

The catastrophic incident occurred, Tuesday, after skirmishes ensued between PSV matatu operators and traffic police, after a defiant motorist failed to stop at a barricade prompting the shooting.

Kisumu County Police Commander, Alphonse Wambua, assured that the officers involved are in custody as IPOA officials conduct the investigations.
