A middle aged man has been arraigned at a Kabarnet court charged with stealing 15 cows worth Sh450,000 netted during a suspected raid.

The accused, Julius Kokorolik Kapitol who appeared before Kabarnet Resident Magistrate Purity Kosgei, was charged for handling stolen goods contrary to Section 278 and for theft contrary to Section 322(1) (2).

The court was informed that on May 17, 2023, the suspect stole 15 cows belonging to Kennedy Komen Chesut at Cheptilat village in Loiyamarok location of Tiaty East sub-county within Baringo.

The suspect who was arrested two days after committing the offence pleaded not guilty to the two counts when they were read to them on Monday.

A prosecution report presented before the court by Vivian Ratemo indicated that a statement from the complainant Mr. Chesut had been obtained and it shall be used as evidence against the suspect.

Kosgei ordered the accused to be remanded in custody at Kabarnet police station pending a pre bail report.

“Should the pre-bail report allow for issuance of bond, the accused shall get temporary freedom as he awaits continuation of the legal proceedings,” the magistrate said.

During the fateful day, one person was shot and injured, and an unknown number of livestock were stolen by suspected armed criminals at Loruk in Baringo North which is a few kilometres from where Kapitol is suspected to have stolen the 15 cows.

When Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki was in Kimalel area, Baringo South for the pass out of 200 National Police Reservists (NPR), he expressed his concern over the said raid and gave security officers a two-week ultimatum to recover all the stolen animals before he returns to the county.
