Member of Parliament for Kathiani Constituency Robert Mbui has criticised the Kenya Kwanza government to increase the 2023/24 budget ahead of the financial year.

He said the increase of funds in the budget will worsen the status of the economy the nation is experiencing now.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Monday,Mbui said the government is just focused on taxing people highly without regarding the hardships they are facing.

Instead, the MP has advised the government to focus on restoring a stable economy before they proceed with overtaxing.

Mbui has noted that the increase in the budget every financial year is the main cause of the high cost of living in the country.

"We feel that every year,we don't have to raise a budget. We can return the budget as it was before if we feel that the economy is not growing at the speed that would have wanted so,"Mbui urged.

He condemned the government for failing to review the poor economy and condition of people of the nation.

The lawmaker has urged the government to increase the remunerations of the civil servants, create jobs so that to increase the level of income before taxing high.

He has insisted that the increase in income will generate more revenue via paying taxes because many will be stable enough to contribute.

Right now,Mbui has said many people both employed and unemployed are struggling to meet their basic needs since their income is not favourable.

“If your salary has not been increased, how do you increase your budget because that is what budget is all about the salaries of Kenyans have not increased, economy of the country is not improved. Why do we keep increase our budget and we keep increasing our expenditure?”MP Mbui asked.

When asked the reason why Azimio walked out of the Parliament during the reading of the Budget,Mbui responded that they had to address some issues in that budget before it was read but they were not listened by Kenya Kwanza allies.

In the financial year 2023-24 Kenya presented first Ksh3.6 trillion ($25.75 billion) budget 2023/24 compare to previous financial year 2022/23 was amounted to Kshs. 2.4 trillion.
