The President of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome has sworn in Angwenyi Jimmy Ondieki as the new Chairman of the National Heroes Council together with Rev. David Lebarleyia as a member of the council.

Angwenyi's appointment to the office runs for a period of 3 years effective from October 13, 2023, while Lebarleyia's appointment takes effect on October 27th, 2023.

Giving an insight on the National Heroes Council, the CJ stated that the institution identifies, selects, recognizes and honours the National Heroes monuments and sites that should be preserved and taken care of.

“As you discharge your role, always bear in mind that the position you assume today is more than just a title or rank, but also a promise to our nation to uphold the ideals of our heroes, their sacrifices and their stories which continue to shape the trajectory of our nation,” she charged.

Further, Koome reiterated that the Council must therefore work towards coming up with ways and avenues through which the nation can pay homage to their courage, sacrifices, and the indomitable spirit that has shaped the identity of the country.

She also urged the Council to ensure that the stories of the country’s heroes continue inspiring and motivating the nation, towards a future that is vibrant and promising as the heroes themselves.

“The oath which you have taken today should guide you in your day-to-day work and dissuade you not to depart from the law,” the CJ directed, stressing that the oath requires the two appointees should serve the country to the best of their abilities and bear in mind the enormous responsibilities placed upon them.

In his remarks, the new chairman thanked Kenyans and the appointing authority for the confidence and opportunity to serve and play an important role in the country.

“I will do my best in this important position I have been appointed to,” Angwenyi vowed.
