President Ruto congratules Tshisekedi on reelection as DRC president, vows to maintain healthy ties

President William Ruto has Congratulated Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi as he was inaugurated into office for the second term on Saturday, 20 January, 2024. 

President William Ruto who attended the inauguration in company of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi alongside other leaders committed to maintain the healthy relations between Kenya and DRC. 

"Congratulations my brother President Félix Tshisekedi." President William Ruto wrote in a statement on X. 

"As you embark on your second term, I wish to assure you and the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of the continued friendship of the people of Kenya." Ruto added 

The Kenyan president vowed to support DRC in peace keeping and restoration efforts within the borders and across. 

" I look forward to working with you to develop closer relations between our countries and foster peace in our region."Ruto said.

Kenya has been playing a pivotal role in facilitating mediation efforts between DRC's  March 23 rebel groups and The Congolese Government which have been in heightened conflict on the Nothern Kivu region.

Former President Uhuru Kenyataa who has been at the centre of mediating the talks also attended the inauguration.

Kenya had also contributed troops to help in Peace Keeping missions in DRC which were recently withdrawn.

The Inauguration was attended by many African leaders including Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.
