A section of school heads and leaders from the Mt. Kenya region have raised concern over the ongoing anti-government protests, saying they will waste learning hours and might affect the end-of-term exam calendar.
Speaking during Thika West Education Day held at Chania Boys High School, the principals said any temporary closure of schools due to the violent protests affects the learning schedule.
Led by the Principal of Thika High School Julius Muraya, they said if the protests are not stopped, it will affect learning and preparations for the end-of-term exams.
They said the protests have instilled fear among learners adding that the teargas canisters thrown at protestors by the police caused anxiety.
They said the chaos set a bad precedent for the learners as they might copy some of those behaviors in the future, calling for a truce between the warring factions.
“Parents should be good models to children. These violent protests might be replicated by learners by burning schools, “said Muraya.
Chania Boys High School Principal James Gitau said they were fully behind the government to help in addressing the challenges facing the education sector.
“The government should facilitate a peaceful learning environment for its learners. It is a risk to have learners stay away from school due to protests. The term is almost coming to an end and there is a need for sobriety as learners prepare for exams,” Gitau said.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and his Thika counterpart Alice Ng’ang’a who were the guests assured that the government has put up mechanisms to ensure sanity returns in schools.
They said the government will not allow demonstrations to destroy the education sector.
During the function, the best-performing schools were awarded certificates and trophies.
The Azimio coalition has since called for another round of demonstrations on Wednesday.
