By Peter Ochieng

Siaya County will play host to the 2024 edition of the ‘Piny Luo’ festival.

The event will run from December 30, 2024 to January 01, 2025, at the historic grounds of Migwena in Siaya County.

Addressing the press at the Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu after a central committee meeting, Jotham Ajiki, the Luo Council of Elders Organizing Secretary said the festival will be themed, "Celebrating our roots, culture and heritage.”

The committee headed by Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Ochieng Owili is in charge of planning for the event.

“This year’s festival will be a grand occasion that celebrates the pride, resilience, and vibrancy of the Luo people,” said Ajiki.

The ‘Piny Luo’ festival, he added, is a unique cultural gathering that serves as a bridge between generations, a showcase of Luo identity, and an opportunity for our people to reconnect with the rich history, traditions, and values that define our community.

He said through music, dance, art, and storytelling, they will honour the luo heritage, in a ceremony that will be attended by all the four Luo governors – Ochillo Ayacko (Migori), Gladys Wanga (Homabay), Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) and the host, James Orengo.

Raila Odinga, the Luo Council of Elders patron will grace the event, with the climax being the official opening of the newly constructed Siaya Stadium on January 01, 2025.

Siaya Combined will play against Bunge FC captained by Rarieda Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Otiende Amollo, before Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side Gor Mahia, face off against Tanzania’s Yanga FC at the new stadium.

“As we gather in Migwena, let us honour our ancestors, celebrate our culture, and reaffirm our commitment to the unity and development of the Luo community,” added Ajiki.

Owili on his part said the celebrations are a replica of what happens in other communities, such as the Turkana who convene for cultural celebrations on a yearly basis.

Homabay County hosted the 2023 edition.
