A total of 5,250 students from humble backgrounds across the six wards of Teso South have benefitted from a Sh127 million county bursary scheme geared towards elevating education status in the sub county.

Speaking after issuing the cheques to beneficiaries at Father Okodoi Secondary School in Amukura West, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education and Vocational Training Pamela Awori noted that education was the only equalizer in the society and thus need to be made affordable to all.

“The main objective of the funds is to boost education in the region and ensure needy, but bright students get an opportunity to continue with their education without any hindrance and also to reduce financial burden on parents,” she said.

The scheme would benefit students in universities, colleges, vocational training centres, secondary school and special groups.

The CEC added that Busia county remains committed to reviving the education status in the county, a move that saw the governor form a committee of experts to address the challenges faced by the sector.

The Chief Officer for Education and Vocational Training John Murioki challenged parents to champion Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) courses to help their children acquire relevant skills favourable to the local and international labour markets.

“The strength and future of a country’s economy depends on two major factors, skills of its manpower and production which comes from it. This can only be achieved through TVET, as it is the masterpiece to alleviate poverty and usher in growth,” said Murioki.

Chakol South MCA Denzil Musumba urged parents from the sub county to enroll the students at Okame TVET and Alupe University to attract more funding from both national and county governments, thus boosting the economy of the area.

“The most important thing that parents and learners need to understand is that the government has made TVET programmes very attractive and market driven by working with the industry players to come up with a blueprint that addresses market needs,” noted Musumba.

He said the county has given education centre stage in order to address various needs and improve the compromised standards of education in the county.
