2023 worse year for most Kenyans

Majority of Kenyans can't wait to 'see the back of 2023.'

According to results of an end year survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA), 7 out of 10 Kenyans say 2023 presented more challenges than the previous year, 2022.

The survey was conducted between November 25, 2023, and December 9, 2023.

Respondents from regions such as Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Northern Kenya and Nyanza were involved.

The high cost of living and high rate of unemployment was behind many respondents stating that 2023 was a worse year.

“Respondents expressed that the cost of living, economic conditions, employment prospects, and access to loans were worse than the previous year,” said TIFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maggie Ireri.

“This perception aligns with reality, evident in the noticeable price rise for essential household items, electricity, fuel, and more,” she added.

76 percent of Nyanza residents led in indicating that 2023 has been a worse year compared to 2022, followed by Nairobi at 74 percent.

TIFA engaged 1,587 people in the survey, with a majority of the respondents (87 percent) holding the view that high cost of basic commodities was the major reason for economic hardships in 2023.

Going into 2024, 6 out of 10 Kenyans believe that it will be a better year, with the highest optimism being recorded in North Eastern at 72 percent, followed by Rift Valley at 68 percent.

“This positive outlook among most Kenyan citizens signifies a hopeful perspective on the future. It reflects a collective belief in positive changes or advancements anticipated to unfold in the coming years,” said Ireri.

President William Ruto who assumed office as Kenya's 5th Head of State September, 2022, has severally told Kenyans that he is putting relevant measures in place aimed at reducing the cost of living.
