Six learners died after being hit by a speeding probox at Wiitu shopping centre, along the Kitui-Kibwezi road on Friday morning.
The three primary school pupils and three secondary school students were crossing the road, before being hit by the probox.
The driver fled from the scene, before surrendering himself to the Mutomo Police Station. Ikitha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Lomachary confirmed the incident, indicating that investigations are ongoing.
In another sad incident, at least four workers died on Friday morning after the walls of a sewer line they were constructing collapsed in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi County. Reports indicate that the incident occurred at 5am.
The Kenya Red Cross Society said three people among the six people who had been trapped were rescued and rushed to hospital.
"Three individuals have been rescued and taken to Mama Lucy Hospital, thanks to a joint operation involving the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Ambulance, Kenya Red Cross and Kenya Police,” reads the update.
National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident.
“They were excavating a sewerage line when it collapsed. We have lost four while three have been rescued,” she stated.
"We have so far retrieved four bodies from the scene following the sewer line collapse. The scene is active and the operation is ongoing led by the regional security team," she added.
The incident comes months after the Nairobi County Government lifted the ban on deep excavation activities within the city.
