A catechist and an altar boy died on the spot and two girls sustained serious injuries when a motorcycle they were riding on collided head on with a tractor along Kambu-Darajani murram road in Kibwezi East Subcounty on Sunday afternoon.
The 1pm accident occurred at Darajani market where the 46-year-old man and the boy aged 14 died and two girls aged 12 and 11 each suffered a broken leg when a tractor coming from the opposite direction left its lane and hit the oncoming motorcycle they were riding on.
“The accident happened when the driver of the tractor, who has gone into hiding, lost control and collided head on with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction," said Kibwezi East Subcounty Police Commander who confirmed the accident to KNA on telephone on Sunday.
The catechist and the altar boy were serving mass at Darajani Catholic Church Kambu Parish and they met their death soon after leaving church.
The Police Commander appealed to motorists plying the area to observe traffic rules and avoid over speeding in a bid to curb accidents happening especially during this holiday season.
"My appeal especially during this festival period is for motorists to be extra careful because it doesn't make sense for people losing innocent lives which could have been prevented on our roads”, lamented Maina.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kambu Subcounty hospital for preservation awaiting autopsy while the injured girls are being treated at the same health facility.
