A Murang’a MCA on Wednesday was grilled by members of one of the Assembly’s committees over remarks she made last week on a WhatsApp group.
MCA for Kanyenyaini ward Grace Nduta appeared before the county Assembly’s committee for powers and privileges to explain her sentiments that her counterparts perceived as aimed at humiliating them.
On May 18, the MCA posted in a WhatsApp group dubbed Murang’a County Politics that her colleagues have failed in their oversight role, something which has led to deterioration of the county’s health sector.
In the post, the beleaguered MCA claimed the situation in local public hospitals was worsening thus causing continued deaths of patients.
Her sentiments did not go well with a section of MCAs prompting her to be summoned for disciplinary action.
During plenary at the County Assembly’s chambers chaired by the Speaker Johnson Mukuha, Nduta stood her ground saying what she posted in the social media platform was the truth.
She told the members of the committee; her statement was occasioned by a bad situation in the local hospital saying some patients have died due to lack of oxygen.
“I can’t withdraw what I said in the social media group. I was just expressing the agony the people who elected us.
“It’s unfortunate that after my post some of my colleagues warned and threatened me of unspecified consequences,” Nduta told members of the committee.
Members of the committee who raised questions felt Nduta abused the honour and privileges of the House by accusing her colleagues for failing in their work.
Kihumbuini MCA Moses Gachui asked the MCA to explain what parameters she used to gauge the performance of her colleagues.
Gachui said posting such sentiment in a public social media group was unnecessary, saying the matter could be raised before the floor of the House for debate.
Other MCAs who spoke accused Nduta of disrespecting them, saying her sentiments could easily be perceived by members of the public that they have failed to oversight the county executive.
After the MCA was summoned to appear before the committee, members of the public gave diverse views with some supporting Nduta while others criticized her post.
Those who backed her said the MCA was right to express her views which may prompt revamping the ailing health sector.
Mukuha said after the plenary, the committee will have a sitting and give its verdict after a period of 14 days.
