A clergyman who allegedly defiled a sick form 3 student in Gwassi South, Homa Bay County while purporting to be praying for her has been arrested alongside the victim’s father.

The two are being locked at Magunga police station pending to be arraigned in court after investigations.

The girl was reportedly sexually abused by the cleric last Thursday evening while pretending to be praying for her.

Suba Sub County Children's Officer Kepher Otago while confirming the incident said the father was arrested for concealing the sexual abuse.

Mr Otago said arrangements were underway to take the girl to a rescue centre adding she was examined at Magunga Sub-county hospital and confirmed to have been defiled.

“The clergyman was expected to pray for the girl but he resorted to defiling her. We collaborated with security officers and arrested the suspects,” Otago said.

Villagers reported that the offense occurred after the girl fell ill and her parents decided she be prayed for instead of taking her to hospital.

“The clergyman proposed to hold prayers for the girl in an enclosed place outside their home compound, to spell out demons. He reportedly convinced the parents and left with the girl after which he defiled her,” Otago added.

“While outside, the suspect allegedly asked the parents of the victim to get back into the house and leave him alone with the student before he defiled the girl,’’ they added.

Otago said the girl was threatened by the clergyman not to disclose the matter to her parents but shared the matter with one of her teachers.

“The teacher took her to hospital and informed authorities," the children's officer said.

Magunga sub-county hospital clinical officer Richard Ojuok said the girl was given medication to prevent her from contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

"We’re appealing to girls who happen to be defiled to seek medical attention as soon as possible,” Ojuok said.

Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring asked the parents to ensure they protect their children from sex pests.

“We’ll not hesitate from taking legal action against people who perpetrate defilement and other child molestation,” Okiring said.
