At least one person has been confirmed dead and more than a dozen injured today near the same spot of a deadly accident within Migori town CBD a month ago.
Similar to the past incident, a tipper lost its breaks as it approached Migori town from Kakrao area before it rammed into pedestrians and motorists within the town centre, killing one and injuring scores of pedestrians.
Suna West police boss Elizabeth Wakuloba said one person died on the spot and they were still compiling data from nearby hospitals about the state of the injured.
"So far we have confirmed one death at Migori Referral Hospital which has also admitted seven victims, we are at the site and police have launched investigations," Wakuloba said.
Eyewitness said the tipper loaded with sand had lost its brakes as it hurtled through the congested Migori town
The body was transferred to the Migori Referral Hospital mortuary and the injured rushed to same hospital for treatment.
"We received one body from the accident scene and more than 12 injured people. We are working to cope with the emergency,” Dr Ian Omondi, the Medical Superintendent at Migori County Referral hospital told the press.
Residents milled around the accident scene which involved seven vehicles, including the ill-fated tipper and several motorbikes.
Last month on April 8, a lorry transporting rice to Isebania town lost control in a similar fashion at around Kakrao centre, five kilometers away before killing 11 people and injuring many within the busy Migori town.
During a requiem mass for the victims, Governor Ochilo Ayacko said despite the Migori-Isebania A1 Road being a responsibility of the national government, they would work together with the national government to ensure that they reduced accidents along the highway.
The governor vowed to have all business people doing trade along the road move as he promised that his administration would give them alternative trading areas.
But ever since the accident, nothing has been done as vehicles are still parked on the road and control of traffic across the busy road has not been carried out by enforcement officers from the county.
