Some 31 adult learners in Kiambu County are currently sitting for the final Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams this year.

Susan Itonde, the Kiambu County adult education officer, told KNA Tuesday that the group comprises 16 females and 15 males, all of whom were present and accounted for during the examinations.

“As of today, which marks their second day of national exams where they will tackle science, Kiswahili, and insha papers, no incidents have been reported”, she said.

Itonde emphasized the importance of overcoming social stigmatization, which often discourages individuals from pursuing education highlighting the need for knowledge acquisition, stating that education plays a vital role in achieving social development goals.

“Residents willing to pursue education no matter at what level should dislocate themselves from social stigmatization. There is a need for knowledge acquisition which can make social development goals to be attained”, she said.

The successful participation of these adult learners according to Itonde not only reflects their determination and dedication, but also underscores the importance of providing equal educational opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or gender.

A brief survey conducted at adult education literacy centers in Kiambu revealed higher participation of women compared to men. This trend is attributed to men's active engagement in various business activities within the county.

Kiambu County, the officer noted, remains committed to supporting adult education initiatives, ensuring that every individual has the chance to enhance their knowledge and skills, contributing to the overall development of the community.

Roselyn Litaba, the Kiambu sub-county director of education, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing examinations, confirming that everything is proceeding smoothly.

"Since we started exams on Monday, everything has been going on well," she said. "We haven't received any reports of issues so far. Today, we are experiencing drizzling weather, but apart from that, everything is good," she said.

The KCPE exams started on Monday and will end on Wednesday.
