Aldrine Kibet wins Sports Personality of the month award

Aldrine Kibet is the August 2023 LG/ Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Sports Personality of the month award winner.

The youngster played a stirring role during the national secondary school games at the Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega, last month.

The 17-year-old footballer scored seven goals, including two in the final, as his outstanding performance aided his St Anthony team to the national boys’ football title, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Nairobi’s Dagoretti High School.

He was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The youngster is set to travel to Spain for trials. Kibet said the award gives him the motivation to work extra hard, going forward.

“This award is another huge motivation especially as I prepare to travel to Spain for trials in a football academy. I could not imagine that I would be recognized and rewarded by LG and sports journalists. I am thankful for the award and I promise to do better in my football career,” he said.

He follows in the footsteps of Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala who was feted about four years ago, while playing for Kisumu Day football team.

LG Electronics East Africa Managing Director Dongwon Lee lauded the young footballer.

“Kibet demonstrated that hard work and discipline in sports yield results. It is even more impressive that Kibet is winning an award that has been nominated by superstars and senior sports personalities. His success on the football pitch is an inspiration to young footballers and the entire sports fraternity in the world,” said Lee.

On his part, James Waindi, SJAK president said much is expected of Kibet as he leaves the country for Spain.

“We encourage you to continue inspiring the youth with your exceptional talent. As sports journalists, we will continue telling the stories of our sports personalities as they write history in local and international events.”
