The Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP) team is on a mission to review the impact of various projects supported by the programme across the county.
The ASDSP National Programme Coordinator Jane Ndungu who paid a courtesy call to Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko explained that Migori was one of the counties that have given a lot of support in overseeing the implementations of the project, marching the required aspects that ASDSP has been giving out in the last five years.
The implementation of the five-year ASDSP programme has focused on effectiveness and efficiencies in the delivery of sustainable results for value chain actors in all 47 counties.
As the programme nears its end in February 2024, Ms Ndungu noted that it was important to evaluate and see the impact that has been actively involved in supporting agricultural enterprises for five years in Migori County.
One successful case is the Blessed Youth Group Milk Enterprise in Migori town. The ASDSP has provided training, market linkages, and capacity-building support to this group, enabling them to improve their productivity and income in the dairy sector.
Another beneficiary of the ASDSP support is Gode Enterprises in Oruba village-Suna East Sub County. This enterprise has also received similar assistance from the program.
These interventions have helped Gode Enterprises enhance its operations and contribute to the growth and development of the agriculture sector in the county.
She applauded the efforts by the County government for fully embracing the projects through proper coordination and work force to realise the dreams of the Migori farmers.
“I am looking forward to the implementation of the next programme; Kenya Agribusiness Development Support Programme that will be market oriented to steer the economic growth of our country”, noted Ndungu.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko said that the county was one of the beneficiaries of the ASDSP programme that has enabled to capacity build farmers and connect them to market.
Ochilo affirmed that his administration will always contribute finances and human capital to support the programmes like ASDSP in improving the livelihood of the local residents.
He added that the aim ASDSP team in the county was to evaluate and establish key successes and positive impact of the project for the five-year journey that comes to an end on February 2024.
Ochilo acknowledged that his administration will fully support the new awaited programme; the Kenya Agribusiness Development Support Programme that will be market oriented and value targeted in linkage value chain.
Early this year the county government in coordination with the national government registered farmers to establish their numbers, size of their farms and their preferred crops.
Ochilo emphasized that the farmer’s data base will help the county to design programmes that will assist farmers in enhancing efficiency in production by reducing wastage in pre and post harvesting as well as identifying markets for them.
He also put across that the county will consider implementing innovative extension services in order not blot the county wage bill.
Ochilo encouraged farmers to take advantage of the support provided by the ASDSP and other organisations in the county and work collectively to uplift the agricultural sector in the county.
Similarly, Migori County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture (CECM) Lucas Mosenda noted that the ASDSP has supported the county initiatives in the local poultry value chain, the daily as well as the sweet potatoes production.
He appreciated all the support accorded by the ASSP towards the implementation of the said projects in the last five years, adding that it has impacted positively the lives of many farmers.
