Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions, accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of not being committed to government policies.

Atwoli's statement, two weeks after Gachagua appeared to contradict himself on leadership, has revived a loud argument on accountability in the current regime.

"That mountain belongs to us all," said Mr. Atwoli, referring to the symbolic importance of Mount Kenya.

He added that people of this region have an identity and responsibility towards one another and asked Gachagua to have his actions serve the collective interest of Kenyans and not in ways that undermine government initiatives.

"You carried the Bible and lied to God, 'Oh God help me to run the government,'" an irate Atwoli said, as frustrations mount over Gachagua's alleged failure to live up to the values he professed at the time of assuming office.

Atwoli's utterances come amidst growing differences between the sentiments of the ruling regime on various policies.

He accused Gachagua of contradicting, in public, those policies where he is expected to show support as a member of the Cabinet and the National Security Committee.

"You should be arrested for the sake of securing the majority," Atwoli declared while bringing weight into his accusations, calling for greater accountability from the Deputy President.

The implication of Atwoli's utterances is grave, as it captures the rising sentiment within trade unions and the public for integrity in leadership.

Gachagua has been in the limelight in the recent past for his utterances which some interpret as divisive.

Such sentiments by top government officials may raise doubt on the will of the Cabinet to foster unity and tackle acute socio-economic concerns effectively.

Analysts argue that in sum, Atwoli's remarks reflect bigger feelings of discontent among Kenyans eager for their leaders to act in consort and in tandem with expressed government ideals.

The country is facing high costs of living, joblessness, and social unrest, and it would be an apt time when leaders project a united front.

Bold challenge thrown at Gachagua by Atwoli indeed stirs important questions on accountability and coherence in Kenya's leadership.
