Gor Mahia's resurgence came to a grinding halt on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bidco United at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos. A sixth-minute penalty, coolly converted by Erik Michubu, proved decisive as the visitors held firm to claim all three points.
Michubu displayed great composure from the spot, sending Kevin Omondi the wrong way as the Gor Mahia goalkeeper remained rooted to his line. Despite relentless efforts to find an equaliser, K’Ogalo were kept at bay by a disciplined Bidco defensive display.
This loss ended Gor Mahia’s three-match winning streak under interim management following the sacking of Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva. On the other hand, Bidco United bounced back from a winless run of three games, comprising two draws and a loss, with this spirited performance.
The defeat could have been more damaging for the reigning champions, but league leaders KCB also dropped points in Mombasa after a 1-1 draw with Bandari. KCB now sit atop the standings with 23 points, six ahead of Gor Mahia, although the latter has two games in hand as they aim to close the gap and secure a third consecutive Premier League title.
Bidco’s defensive masterclass was particularly evident in their containment of Gor Mahia’s key players, including playmaker Austin Odhiambo, who found little space to operate.
Gor Mahia will seek to bounce back quickly when they host Shabana on Wednesday in a bid to maintain their pursuit of the title.
