An organization in Kakamega, Bodaboda Medical Ventures, is linking bodaboda riders to banks and other insurance schemes for last expense covers.
The Secretary General of the Organization, Steven Shitanda, who is also a teacher at Museno Secondary school said they have partnered with Co-operative Bank of Kenya and other insurance providers to offer the services at affordable rates.
He said a trend where bodaboda riders and other youth collect monies in streets when they lose their loved ones could end if they enroll for the schemes and contribute Sh1000 per month.
He noted when they lose their loved ones, the insurer will provide Sh100 000 as last expense and Sh50 000 to each of the dependants.
“We enrolled about 1500 bodaboda riders last year,730 of them are active,” he added.
Apart from the last expense cover, the organization also provides personal accident covers to bodaboda riders where they contribute Sh50 per day.
“In case a person is involved in an accident, the insurer will cover them with Sh500 000 for death and Sh500 000 for permanent disability,” he pointed out.
He also noted that when they are admitted in hospital, they will get support of Sh70 000 and an additional Sh4000 per week for up to four weeks of hospital admission.
The Organization whose vision is to inculcate self-reliance, responsible and disciplined culture among the bodaboda riders is also conducting outreach programs in partnership with government agencies to bring essential services closer to bodaboda riders who may not have time to seek those services in offices.
“It’s challenging for Jua Kali artisans and bodaboda riders to visit offices to get services, that is why we saw it fit to bring these services closer to them,” he said.
